Write for Xcell Publications

It's easier than you think.

Thank you for your interest in writing an article for Xcell Publications.

We accept for review all articles from Xilinx employees, partners, and customers on topics that promote and expand the programmable digital design market.

Xcell now includes new Feature sections:

  • Xcellence in Communications: Typically methodology pieces describing the use of Xilinx devices in concert with Xilinx and Xilinx partner IP, tools & development boards to address communication applications.
  • Xcellence in Automotive & ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical): Typically methodology pieces describing the use of Xilinx devices in concert with Xilinx and Xilinx partner IP, tools & development boards to address A&D applications.
  • Xcellence in Aerospace & Defense: Typically methodology pieces describing the use of Xilinx devices in concert with Xilinx and Xilinx partner IP, tools & development boards to address Automotive and ISM applications.
  • Xcellence in New Applications: Typically methodology pieces describing the use of Xilinx devices in concert with Xilinx and Xilinx partner IP, tools & development boards to address applications other than communications, Automotive & ISM or A&D.
  • Xperts Corner: A how-to, tips and tricks type feature targeting advanced users of Xilinx devices. If you’ve come up with a cool way to speed up the performance of a block, reduce power, etc. let your fellow engineers know about it in this sections.
  • Xplanation: FPGA 101: A tutorial article that explains basic application or FPGA design concepts. These articles can be as basic as the differences between serial and parallel, the evolution of PCI, or can be as specific as Using ChipScope IBA to Debug Microprocessor issues.
  • Xperiment: An article describing experimental, hobbyist or bizarre uses of Xilinx devices. These articles can range anywhere from descriptions of cutting edge uses of devices in academia like supercomputer design to quirky uses of devices such as orchestrating the lighting of a Christmas display or modifying an appliance with a Xilinx FPGA to do something that certainly wasn’t described in the appliance’s original users manual, such as a robot warring toaster.

Getting Started

We have prepared an author's template in which you must write or paste your article (using the appropriate styles). The template also contains guidelines written as a sample article. By following the guidelines and imitating the appearance of the sample article, we can edit and publish it quickly.

Accepting Your Article

We will accept for review only those articles submitted in the approved template. Once received, all articles are subject to review by our Technical Review Board. In some cases, we may ask you to make changes to and resubmit your article before beginning the formal editorial process.

The Editorial and Production Process

Now that we've accepted your article, what's next? We will assign an editor to your article, who will work with you as your main contact throughout the editorial process. The editor will edit your article and email it back to you for review.

We ask that you review it carefully for technical accuracy, make any corrections directly in the file, and send your revisions back within two business days.

The editor will review your changes and send your article to our art director, who will lay out your article into our magazine format. You will have final approval of the article content.

The Publishing Process

Once your article is accepted and finalized according to our editorial and production process, our web team will convert your article to PDF format and publish it to Xcell Publications website.

Following that, your article will be placed in the pool of articles eligible for print publication in the next issue of the magazine.

Schedule ... Timing is Everything

The Xcell Journal is published quarterly in January, April, July, and October. Please see the publication schedule for complete editorial, production, and printing dates. Note that there are article submission deadlines for each issue. Some issues have feature sections, where noted.

Where and How Do I Submit My Article?

We will accept for review all articles submitted in the approved template and attached in an e-mail sent to the Xcell Publications publisher. We will then send you a response letting you know that we have received your article, along with further instructions.

That's Fine, But...?

Here are some answers to a few frequently asked questions when writing for Xcell Publications.

  • Instead of submitting the article, can I submit an outline or a draft?
No, please finish your article using our attached template and submit that.
  • Can I submit an article that has been previously published elsewhere?
Xcell will copyright whatever we publish. Submitting an article that is run elsewhere raises complicated copyright issues. And, of course, we want our readers to be the first to read articles that have something new to say about the programmable digital design market. Oftentimes, we will give established independent publications permission to run articles that previously appeared in Xcell. These usually include “Courtesy of Xilinx Xcell Journal.”
  • I can not produce graphics, can you create them for me?
Although our art director does polish all figures and tables published in Xcell, we can not create graphics from scratch. Please see our Graphics Guidelines.
  • Can I use my article, upon publication, in promotional materials for my own company?
Yes. However, please acknowledge the source. For example, "Reprinted with permission from Xilinx Xcell." If the reference is online, we would also appreciate, though not required, a link to our website:www.xilinx.com/xcell.
  • How much will you pay me for my article?
We do not pay for articles.
  • Now that you have published my article in Xcell Journal, how many copies can I have, and do I have to pay for them?
We send all published authors five copies of the issue in which their article appears, at no charge. If you desire additional copies, contact the Xcell Publications publisher.
