1) Install the FLEX software on the server.
This can be done either by installing the Xilinx software, or by copying the FLEX utilities over to the server.
Note: if the server is also going to be a client, the Xilinx software (ISE/Vivado/Vitis) must be installed.
If Xilinx software is installed on the server, the FLEX utilities (i.e. lmgrd and xilinxd) can be found in the following locations:
If the server is not going to be a client, there is no need to install the entire Xilinx software package (for example, Vivado/Vitis).
The FLEX utilities can just be obtained and transferred over to the server, as this requires much less disk space.
It is recommended that the license executable (lmgrd), the license file, and the debug and report log files all reside on locally mounted disks.
For information on the supported Operating Systems that you can use as a server for FLEXnet licensing, see (Xilinx Answer 39333).
For more information on how to obtain the standalone FLEX files, including the "xilinxd" daemon for Linux/Solaris systems, see: (Xilinx Answer 33022).
2) Obtain a HOST-ID (for the license server).
The following are valid HOST-IDs most commonly used for floating licenses:
3) Generate a floating license.
4) Save the new license file locally on the server.
You can save it under any name and to any place on your server.
5) Modify the license file.
The lines of the license file that you might need to modify are the SERVER, DAEMON and/or VENDOR lines if they are not filled-in already.
Example: SERVER elmo 00A0C91412DB 2200
If the license contains a VENDOR or DAEMON line, you must modify the path to the "xilinxd" executable, unless the xilinxd executable is found in the environment PATH.
VENDOR xilinxd c:\xilinx\bin\nt\xilinxd.exe
DAEMON xilinxd /usr/xilinx/sol/bin/xilinxd
If the server and client are connecting through a firewall, you must specify a return port for the firewall to give access, see (Xilinx Answer 33115).
6) Start lmgrd on the server.Follow the instructions provided in the User Guide UG973 -> Installing Your License Key File
(UG973) - https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2020_1/ug973-vivado-release-notes-install-license.pdf
(If a different version of UG973 is required, modify the above URL and change xilinx2020_1 part to the desired version required, e.g. xilinx2019_1, etc.)
For more information on setting up the License Manager to run as a service on Windows, see (Xilinx Answer 32780).
7) Set up the client machines to use the license server.
To do this, modify the XILINXD_LICENSE_FILE system environment variable.
This can be done via Vivado License Manager (VLM) or via a command in the command/terminal console.
You can also use the LM_LICENSE_FILE to point to the license server.
More info can be found here: (Xilinx Answer 42503).
Note: The port number (2200) and the server name (elmo) must match the port number and server name contained in the license file.
SERVER elmo 00A0C91412DB 2200
